About Telstra Tower
Construction of Telstra Tower began in 1972, the site opened on 15th May 1980,
The tower sits on top of Black Mountain, with it’s antenna spire hitting 192.5m tall.
it’s former name was ‘Telcom Tower,’ but was renamed in 1993 to ‘Telstra Tower.’
The foundations alone consumed 150 truck loads of concrete.
The tower featured a revolving restaurant, which made one full revolution every 83 minutes. – this closed in 2013.
The viewing deck sits 60 meters above ground level of the site.
About It’s Role In Communications
Prior to its construction telecommunications was provided by a tower site on Red Hill.
Black Mountain was selected in 1960 as a television broadcast site, and it allowed Canberra residents to use indoor television antennas.
Tourist Information
The site has a visitor deck, both behind glass, and an outside skydeck which gives you an unobstructed view of Canberra.
